VMware technology: new multicloud strategy
VMware’s agreement with AWS has been the star of the first day of VMworld Europe 2016, despite its announcement taking place last week. VMware technology wil be the new solution for multicloud sevices in the companies.
VMworld USA has already made clear the company’s new strategy of enabling a multicloud environment in which customers can choose to be with VMware technology solutions in both the public and private cloud. The announcement of its Cross-Cloud architecture and the agreements with IBM and AWS are key to this vision.
With these announcements, VMware wants to become the link that makes the combination of “freedom and control” possible, according to Patrick P. Gelsinger, CEO of the company, and this has much to do with making access to the public cloud possible.
For this reason, having the leading global cloud provider, in addition to the large IBM business partner, announced shortly before, is a great achievement for the virtualization firm.
“The cloud providers are very well chosen because the first represents the large company and the second the access to the volume,” says María José Talavera, general manager of VMware in Spain and Portugal.
“VMware solutions are directly on AWS hardware so the customer does not have to know about Amazon technology, but can leverage all the knowledge he already has with his private cloud on premise with VMware technology. But you can also access Amazon’s advanced services, which you might not have accessed if you did not have your basic cloud infrastructure with VMware technology, “explains Moisés Navarro, the company’s Business Solutions Strategist.
That said, there were product announcements at VMworld Europe that, although eclipsed by the agreements, are also dramas for the data center industry:
VMware vSphere 6.5 offers a simplified customer experience, integrated security, and compatibility with modern container applications currently in production.
VMware Virtual SAN 6.5 supports physical and container workloads, 512e hard drives, solid state drives, and the direct connection of two nodes to branch office or remote office environments.
Finally, VMware vRealize Automation 7.2 incorporates container management and new integration with Microsoft Azure ready to use VMware vCloud Air introduces a new data recovery disaster solution for enterprises.
But the important thing, in any case, is the functional advance. Per Moisés Navarro, the orchestration, operations management and day 2 announcements in both public and private cloud, represented by Cross Cloud architecture through VMware Cloud Foundation, are fundamental in this new vision of the company.
VMware’s Cross-Cloud Architecture, which will be available in 2017, enables customers to run, manage, connect and secure their applications across different clouds and devices in a shared operating environment.
VMware technology Cloud Foundation delivers next-generation hyper converge infrastructure to build private clouds that combine VMware vSphere (VMware vSphere and VMware Virtual SAN) software with the VMware NSX network virtualization platform.
IBM has been the first vendor to integrate it, although Navarro hopes new service providers will soon be incorporated in these public and private clouds.
