HYBRID CLOUD PLATFORM FOR SCIENCE
Europe will have a hybrid cloud platform for science, Helix Nebula – The Science Cloud (HNSciCloud) has launched a tender for 5.3 million euros for the creation of a European hybrid cloud platform. The aim of the platform is to support the deployment of high-performance computing and big data capabilities for scientific research.
The pre commercial project HNSciCloud is funded by the European Commission in collaboration with ten major research organizations in Europe, as in the case of Ifae (IFAE) of Barcelona or the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). This commercial pre contract covers R & D services related to the design, development and experimental use of a platform that will support hybrid cloud environments.
The new cloud platform must face the great challenges involved in providing services at the level of IaaS, such as computation and storage of a wide range of virtual machines that will support researchers working with data sets in the range peta byte; management of network connectivity and federated identity; and payment service models that explore a range of purchase options to determine the most suitable models workloads for scientific applications to be deployed.
The new project will serve scientists and engineers working in high-energy physics, astronomy, biomedical research and other fields in which ten organizations operate. They will be the first customers of the platform and integrate their internal resources with cloud services acquired.
During the pilot phase, the platform will provide hybrid cloud services on demand and resilient geographically distributed users. This will include access to data generated by research organizations housed on the platform.
In addition, the platform should serve interested beyond the initial investigators parties, also reaching the private sector to offer innovative services that unlock the potential of research and analysis of data. This will open new opportunities for economic growth and contribute to the creation of the European Cloud Initiative.
