57% of CIOs redesigns their strategy to take advantage of the digital transformation

Digital transformation and new technologies are changing the way we work and connect at the same time, they help to break barriers to entry in many markets, allowing the arrival of new startups against which traditional companies are more difficult compete.

63% of CIOs believe that convergence between sectors will have an unprecedented impact on their business and 57% is redesigning its strategic direction to take advantage of the digital transformation. Responsible for technological companies are increasingly aware of these challenges and 50% is already preparing to face the entry of new competitors from other sectors.

These are some of the main findings of the study “Redefining the limits: Conclusions of the global survey of CEOs and senior management – CIO Perspective” prepared by the Institute for Business Value IBM among over 1,800 CIOs worldwide.

Preparing for the new

According to respondents CIOs, mobile solutions, cloud computing or the Internet of Things (IoT) will enjoy greater role in their companies within three to five years, despite being technologies that have long been within reach. For example, although it may seem that cloud technology is widespread, the reality is that almost half of CIOs (49%) is still investigating, analysing or choosing your cloud solution.

However, one aspect that itself has permeated the consciousness of the CIO, rather than the other managers is that of security, considered the greatest risk by 76% of the total, compared with 67% of other management positions. In this sense, the CIO shows that risk management is a priority, but if we look at the key strategic priorities to transform the company, improve intelligence and knowledge of your company (85%), scan the front office (83%) and strengthen the powers of the IT department (80%) are the main objectives. It is three logical and interrelated objectives: To assist sales and marketing departments to understand what customers are saying and to create a closer relationship with them involves providing the appropriate analytical, digital and social tools.

As part of this study, IBM has also differentiated between two subgroups of CIOs: The flag bearers (those from companies with a solid financial history and reputation) and market followers (those from companies with a profile lower market and they have not been so successful from a financial point of view). In this sense, IT managers are starting to spend less time reduce costs and more time to stimulate innovation, but here there is a clear gap between CIOs “standard bearers” (90%) compared to their colleagues in companies defined as “followers of the market” (36%).

Companies want to be as agile as a ‘start-up’

Organizations from all sectors need to optimize their processes to accelerate the process of marketing their products and services. This is the main demand that moves the business address the IT department and the most widespread opinion among CIOs is that they must have effective applications and created ad hoc, as do the start-ups. While CIOs are focusing on getting more value, many of them overlook a key source of intelligence: the external customer, since only take into account your opinion 36%. These professionals tend to rely more on external opinion leaders (61%).

Moreover, the need to analyse data effectively takes on a greater significance among CIOs, as is clear from this study: 44% plan to invest in advanced analytics. To date, most analytical systems are explicitly scheduled to be deterministic. They can only solve problems if you have programmed them to do so and only offer answers yes / no. By contrast, cognitive systems learn from their interaction with users and their experiences in the environment, which explains the growing interest of professionals consulted.

In short, CIOs are aware that the digital disruption is widespread and should be prepared for a future in which the differences between sectors and competitors will blur. One conclusion of the study is that CIOs are aware of the importance of promoting innovation significantly, designing projects easy to manage, with specific tasks to different computers. Also, the way is to take advantage of all customer information, in order to understand it better. In this sense, CIOs advocate mainly by advanced analytics technologies, which will help them better understand their business and identify the competencies that time should be reinforced in the future.
