Amazon plans to invest in data centers in Italy over the next 12 months, according to a pair of anonymous sources cited by Reuters.The news agency said the plans include construction of facilities in old power plants Enel to support its services division in the cloud.

Data centers will be built in order to develop new fiber optic infrastructure along the lines of power transmission Enel, thus improving broadband connectivity in the country.

Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi announced in April a strategy for using the transmission lines to accelerate broadband throughout the country, according to Reuters article.

In total, it is expected that investment will rise to 500 million euros (550 million dollars). The project also would involve the development of a storage and logistics center of nearly 60,000 square meters in the region of Lazio, on the outskirts of Rome, for a figure of 150 million euros (165 million dollars).

An additional development center built in Turin support the development of the tool artificial intelligence language Alexa, Amazon reports Unita a local media.

The source quoted by Reuters said the plan will try to make the Alpine country, the fourth largest economy in the EU, as a leader in digital commerce. The small and medium enterprises in the country is lagging behind others in Europe, the source added.

Francesco Starace, CEO of Enel previously said Amazon is one of the companies interested in buying three of its old power plants, as reported in the daily Corriere della Sera.
